September 2022
Cycle 4
Students in P1st-2nd had the opportunity to use their personal space and locomotor skills in a variety of activities. One such game was Building Bridges. Half of the class is a bridge, while the other half is a traveler. Travelers move around the gym using different locomotor skills and go around, under, or over the bridges depending on how the teacher asks them to move.
3-5 grades began working on the skill of ball rolling. Students reviewed the 5 cues (Ready, Swing, Step, Bend, Roll), and then took part in some activities to expand on that skill. One game was called Fitness Bowling. In groups of 3-4, students try to roll a foam bowling ball at a pin. If they knock down the pin, their team gets to add one more. This continues if they knock down all of the pins standing. The goal is to reach 10 pins and knock all 10 down.
Cycle 3
This cycle, P1st-2nd worked on their locomotor skills: walk, power walk, jog, run, gallop, skip. They did these through a variety of activities while building upon looking for open/personal space while moving at different speeds.
3rd, 4th, and 5th continued with their cooperative skills through different activities. These included controlling robots (students) by tapping them and moving them to open spaces in the gym. They also took part in a team Triathlon which included 3 different underhand throwing activities that involved a great deal of teamwork.
3-5 graders were introduced to our heart rate monitors. They will learn more throughout the year on how their heart works during play.
Cycle 2
This cycle, P1st-2nd graders worked on general and personal space. They worked on finding open space and moving in creative ways. One game was to pretend you were an animal in the zoo and move the way that animal would move.
3rd-5th graders worked on Fitness and Skill Challenges with a variety of partners. After each challenge they complete, they would move on and find a different partner to work with.
Cycle 1
Welcome back!! During our first cycle of classes, students were introduced to their new colors for the year, as well as some of the management cues I use in class. These include:
Coach - Sit in front of me
Homebase - Stand on your color spot
Out - Stop playing, hands on your knees, eyes on me
Line up - Line up behind your color cone
Depending on age level, students played Name Tag or Favorites Tag. In Name Tag, when they are tagged, they find me and tell me their first name. This helps me to learn some of my new students. In favorites Tag, students tell me some of their favorite things (summer moments, books, movies, food, etc.) when they are tagged.
Students also played a game called Rainbow Road, where they had to memorize a color pattern and touch those homebases with their feet.
The goal of cycle 1 was to give them some exercise while learning the basics to Physical Education class, and give them a positive experience.
Students also found new partners, created their own exercises, then sat and talked about what they did over the summer.
